What Social Media Can’t Do:
- Social Media can’t make up for a bad product
If my education has taught me anything, it has taught me that quality is designed in a product, not added in later. All too often we are exposed to inferior products. They promise one thing, but then you bring it home and it’s garbage. Here’s the thing – No matter how great your social media campaign is, if your product is inferior, social media is not going to help you. In fact, with social media’s reach, it will hurt you. So if you’re product gets a 3 out of 10 on the quality scale, I recommend focusing on improving the product.
- Social Media can not make you an overnight success
As with any success, it takes work. If you think that you can simply set up a Facebook page, a Twitter account, an Instagram feed, a YouTube channel, or any other account and voila everyone knows about you, think again. Social media takes work. It requires you to actually engage with fans, friends, and followers to build a repertoire of trust.
- Social Media cannot be free
Sure, setting up the accounts takes a matter of minutes, but then you have to actually monitor the accounts and make posts, and participate. This takes time and we know that time is money. Depending on your social media strategy, you may need to pay a little bit to reach a larger audience, those outside of your immediate social network.
What Social Media Can Do:
- Social Media can help you gain your customer’s trust
I firmly believe that we do business with people we know. But if we’ve never met, then how will you and I get to know each other? Social Media allows you to be human with other people, to interact without constantly pitching your products, it allows you a real person, with real feelings, in a digital medium where humanity is celebrated. It provides a place where you and I can meet in real time, but maybe not in real life.
- Social Media can be an effective way to spread your message
You post something funny, informative, inviting, controversial and chances are that another person will engage in a conversation, or share your words with their fans, followers, and friends.
- Social Media can be affordable
As I mentioned, setting up your social media accounts are pretty much free because they only cost you a few minutes of your time. And utilizing social media itself doesn’t have to take too much of your time in order to be effective. Gone are the days where small businesses are paying thousands of dollars to reach other people, because, in today’s day and age, you can have the same, if not a more profound effect for a fraction of that cost.
